Simon Schama
In the introduction to his book The Embarrassment of Riches (1987), an interpretation of Dutch culture in the 17th century, historian Simon Schama observes that "it is the peculiar genius of the Dutch to seem, at the same time, familiar and incomprehensible".
Schama, in the more than 600 pages which follow that observation, provides a wealth of pictures and text to support his interpretation.
